It is in 1951 that the history of Beaujolais begins. In 1968, an "official" date of releasing is fixed : it will be November 15th of every year at midnight. To avoid a releasing on weekend, this date will finally be celebrated on the 3rd Thursday of November.
Until this date, there was no event to celebrate the glory of the Beaujolais, and Beaujeu, historic capital of Beaujolais become a place to commemorate the release of Beaujolais nouveau.
It is November 15th of 1989 that was created the first edition of Sarmentelles de Beaujeu. A real popular festivity had been born : the famous public release of "Beaujolais nouveau". It was named "Sarmentelles", by reference, of course, to the vine.
This event was a success. More than 1000 people came to celebrate this evening. English, Danish guests... all celebrated the "new wine". After the parade of wheelbarrows carrying the burning vines the official departure of the Beaujolais nouveau could take place in the 12th blow of midnight. On this occasion, Beaujeu set up a special vintage of Beaujolais-villages "Sarmentelles de Beaujeu".
In 1995/1996, a new start for this festivity was launched. The logistics allows to deliver the "Beaujolais Nouveau" before midnight, and since this date, we celebrate 'the putting in the consumption" with a very spectacular putting gimlet. This party became international, more and more important foreign delegations, are welcomed every year. The national and international medias are present to cover the event, broadcasting it worldwide. This celebration can only take place thanks to the partners and to more than 300 volunteers who are each year more implicated. This year we shall celebrate the 25th edition, and a wind of innovation is going to blow on this festive weekend. Come to live with us unforgettable moments, a warmth welcoming, a weekend dedicated to the glory of Beaujolais.
