The idea to create the Beaujolais guild dates back to just after the Second World War. The first assembly of the Compagnons du Beaujolais took place on the 3rd of March 1948 in Villefranche-sur-Saône. The founding members: Léon Folliard, Jean Guillermet, Justin Godart, and Robert Pinet took their inspiration from the rites of the former guild, the “Compagnons du Tour de France”, based on solidarity, fraternity, loyalty, faithfulness, mutual aid, and humility.
Since then the Compagnons have continued to defend and promote the Beaujolais area and wine: in the region, in France, but also around the world, proclaiming their famous motto, “VUIDONS LES TONEAUX”.
To become a Compagnon (or Compagnonne), you must take part in an induction ceremony given by the Ordre du Beaujolais.
The induction is a solemn act before Saint Vincent, during which you commit to be a loyal and frank Beaujolais compagnon, and practise the virtues.
Just like in any guild, only the Grand Conseil de l’Ordre made up of senior members, can decide who they consider to be worthy members to be welcomed into the guild.
Come and watch this grand ceremony on the main stage on the town hall square in Beaujeu.
